"What I Want"

For as long as I can remember I've wanted a balcony. Something is just so romantic about them. The modern Romeo and Juliet didn't help the situation.

Whether it be on a multistory home or my dream, a hotel overlooking Paris. French doors that open up to a iron railing enclosed space. Surrounded by plants and flowers. A place to sit and have tea, read, or sunbath.

Not many homes in Arizona have such beautiful architecture. I wish they did.

I went into my garden this morning and had a nice surprise. My poppies are blooming! I have some color in my garden. I have flowers in my garden. It's wonderful. Slowly, it's coming together.

I think every person has that go to song, album, or band. The one they listen when they need inspiration. To be angry, sad, happy, etc.

Mine is Godsmack. The first song I heard, way back in High School, got me hooked. I've been a fan since. The album "Awake" got me through High School and every album they've made means something to me. Even Sully Erna's book and solo album have a place. He is amazingly talented.

"Strawberry Fields"

This week has been up and down and up and down. Very emotional.

I'm on vacation this week. But it hasn't felt like a vacation. Appointments and Jury Duty. Not being able to sleep in. I hope the rest of the week is better. This weekend is my birthday. We all know how I feel about that... enough said.

However, I did get the overwhelming desire to bake this week. I've been craving pound cake for awhile. Don't ask why. It's my version of Strawberry Shortcake. Trust me, it tastes way better than the little shortcakes you can buy pre-made, pour some Whipped Cream on, and cut up some strawberries to top.

Plus, it's simple to make.

The recipe for the cake actually comes from my mother's 1980 copy of Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook. I love this cookbook. I remember as a child I would sit and look at all the pictures hoping my mom would make all the cakes, pies, cookies, and other desserts. It's old. The cover is completely removed from the actual book. But, I use it. The vanilla glaze comes from a 1991 copy of a Betty Crocker cookbook. Another simple recipe. Add some fresh strawberries and you're all set.

German Gold Poundcake
2 cups of sugar
1 cup of butter - softened
3 1/2 cake flour (I always use regular white flour)
1 cup of milk
6 egg yolks
1 1/2 tsp double acting baking powder
2 tsp vanilla extract (I use more)
1/8 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 350
Grease your pan(s). I use the loaf pans because I don't own a Bundt pan.
Mix the ingredients together and pour it in the pan(s)
Bake for 45 min to 1 hour
Make sure to use a toothpick inserted into the center to make sure it's not still running and everything is done in the center.
Cool

Vanilla Glaze
1/3 cup butter
2 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla (again I used more)
2 to 4 tbsp water

Heat butter in a saucepan until melted
Stir in powdered sugar and vanilla until dissolved
Add water 1 tbsp at a time until you reach the desired consistency. The more water you add the thinner it will be. I only used 2.
Pour over the cake
I used a brush to spread the glaze to cover the entire loaf. If you do this, do it quickly. It starts to cool fast and becomes hard to spread.

Enjoy.

"How Does Your Garden Grow"

Now that the stress of the holidays has past... and there will be some time to relax, it's time to get back to doing what I enjoy doing. As opposed to what I have to do. My New Year's resolution... be happy. This is part of it. I love being outside, I love my garden. It's the perfect place to unwind and clear my head. Even if there isn't much in there.

I planted some cilantro a couple of weeks ago. It's doing wonderfully and I've actually used some for some recipes (lime and cilantro white rice, black bean soup). I'm not a huge fan of the herb, but it provides a beautiful green to the garden.

I also planted parsley at the same time. It's not going as quickly, haven't gotten to use it yet. But, I love parsley. And the thyme... well, it's barely started to sprout. Another favorite herb.

My favorite color roses. Has a few blooms. My hope, during Spring it's covered in color.

My new adventure... bulbs. I've never planted bulbs before. I'm quite scared I'll kill them. Take it as it comes I suppose. I need to do some reading on tulips.

I also planted some more avocado seeds and poppies. My cats broke the last tree I planted. I thought it as dead, but it's starting to sprout leaves. I'm hopeful it will still be a perfectly healthy plant. The others are for pollination. I really want fruit.

Next, tomatoes, bell peppers, and strawberries. Oh, and sunflowers and watermelon and carrots and... so much to do.

This past Christmas I received the BEST present I've ever been given. It is now one of my very favorite things. I wish I had it through the whole season, but I have it for the playoffs... and dare I say the Super Bowl.

Now that the holidays have past. Decorations put away. It's time to think about the new year and everything that I want to accomplish. Resolutions. If you haven't noticed yet, I'm an over thinker. And yes, I've already began thinking way into the future and everything I've yet to achieve. I get overwhelmed and blah, blah, blah.

So, I spent some time outside the other day. Reflecting. How do I want this year to be? I've mentioned the events that have me excited. Guy finally asked me out on a date. I'm giddy. This year will be better.

Resolutions... they always seem to be the same as the year before. I'm being vague about them this year. My resolution is to be happy. So whatever I feel will make me happier, that's what I'll pursue.

As Seen On: Friends With Benefits

I recently watched "Friends With Benefits" and spent more time looking at Jamie's apartment than I at the actual movie. And for good reason. It is gorgeous. I've been scrambling the internet trying to find some pictures of it, but alas I could not. So I made my own screencaps.

When you first enter the space it's inviting. I love the weathered piece behind the door. And the coat rack... I love iron coat racks.

I love everything about this space, architecturally. The decorative molding on the walls, large windows, built in bookcases, French doors. Beautiful. Plus, the decor isn't shabby either.

The mantel and fireplace surround are stunning. And the wood floors. Love.

The living room is so young, yet sophisticated. And again, an eclectic space, which I love. The room is bathed in light, which only seems to happen in the movies. We tend to forget how important it is in real life.

Love the French doors leading to the patio area.

The kitchen looks so lived in and comfy. Small but functional. Everything serves a purpose and is multi-functional. However, the view right into the bathroom... not so nice. That door would be kept shut if I lived there.

To me the highlight of the entire set is the patio. It is open to three different spaces which connects the entire "home" together. From the bedroom, living room, and kitchen it becomes more of an indoor space than an actual outdoor patio. The brick walls, lush green plants and metal accents are my exact taste. Oh how I wish I had this. I totally love the doors too.

I know these are not the best pictures, but to show the bedroom... well you know. The mix of furniture styles (I especially love the blue chair) and architectural details is to much to pass up.

I couldn't capture any great pictures of the bathroom, really they didn't show it much. I tried to give a little taste though.

The movie its self wasn't horrible, but again I spent more time checking every detail in Jamie's apartment than actually watching it. I must say, however, Justin Timberlake actually gave a pretty decent performance. I laughed a few times. I saw watch it whenever you've run out of movies you're interested in seeing. If only for the awesome New York scenery and apartments.

"When it Rains"

Another rainy winter day. Another good day.

I wanted to take photos of something different. And I realized I've never photographed my car. I love my car. A little blue Yaris. Right now she's in need of some cosmetic work. A minor fender bender a few months ago that I've yet to have time to go fix. She is my first car, therefore special to my heart. My first big purchase.

Anyway, she was sitting in the street and I noticed how beautiful everything had come together. The mechanics of the car, asphalt, concrete, flowing water, tumbling leaves.

I like it. Multiple elements, both natural and man made, coexisting.

Perhaps it's me. I tend to find beauty in the strangest things.

"Light My Fire"

With the weather being so chilly I really wish I had a fireplace. Curl up next to a warm flame and relax, become mesmerized. Oh, how I wish.

However, during warmer weather they are beautiful too.

One of the most naturally beautiful things in the world is wood. Incorporating it into your decor is a must.

everyone had a Merry Thanksgiving (my sister and I decided we liked the way it sounded and have stuck with it for years) with a safe and polite Black Friday.

Mine was good, pretty uneventful... like every year. I've never shopped a Black Friday, don't want to, plus I always have to work.

I did get some Christmas decorating done. Not a lot.

Our console table by our front door. I've never put a tree on it before. I really love how it turned out.

We set up our large tree but nothing is on it yet. I need to do some shopping for a base. Twigs and berries. I found some I really like at Walmart. Just haven't had the time to get run and pick them up.

The tree skirt is actually a throw my sister made. She's a fabric specialist at Hobby Lobby and it always sewing and creating things with fabric. It's also my inspiration for the theme this year.

My sister's cat, Kira, thought it was a wonderful place to nap. My cat, Clover, soon followed her big brother. They are so cute.

"The Red"

It's been a hectic, crazy month or so. I don't foresee it getting better any time soon either. I don't nearly enjoy my job as much as I use to. So, I went and bought me some five dollar flowers at Walmart. A very inexpenive way to brighten my room and hopefully my mood. The deep, velvety red is getting me ready for Christmas. It looks amazing against my butter yellow walls.

I "borrowed" my sister's kettle to use as a vase. A treasure I believe she found at Goodwill. It's beautiful with it's patina. I need to make another trip down there. But, I'm poor and can't afford anything... especially when I need to start thinking about Christmas gifts for the family.

Oh, I wanted to share these too. They're starting to wilt and will be thrown out soon. I love this lemonade jar as the vase.

Holiday season is upon us. I can't believe we're creeping up on Black Friday. Wait... let's not talk about that. It's still a couple of weeks away and I'm not ready to think about the craziness that will ensue. For those who work retail, I know you feel my pain.

On to the point. This time of year. Love it. The cool crisp weather. The quiet. Everything about it. So relaxing even if work isn't. What's even better? The abundance of peppermint candy canes. Yummy.

It's a simple treat that I must have every year. To decorate with, to eat.

Trick or Treat

I threw my first ever Halloween party the other day. It went pretty well considering. Considering I had a really awful weekend at work and not many people came (including guy, who I really wished did). But I got to vent and see some friends, which is always good.

Life isn't too great at the moment and I really want to fill this page with my woes... but I won't.

I've never made candied apples before, and frankly I don't know why. Apples, caramel, and some sprinkles and you have a simple Autumn treat.

Spread out on the table guests were free to make their own creations.

Perhaps next year I can take some time off and throw an other. A horror movie marathon... I'm not good at this sort of thing. Ha!

I loved the scene where she first meets Henry. Where she's in the play. Adorable. That's what I'm recreating. Not nearly as beautiful as the costumes on the show, but I did my best.

"Hideaway"

It's the last day of my vacation. Tomorrow is back to reality. I'm so looking forward to it... Must I go back?

Yesterday my sister and I took a spontaneous trip up to Payson to hike the Tonto Natural Bridge. We've been before and it's so beautiful. It's amazing that here in the desert there are places like this.

You can actually hike from a trail on one side, hike through, and come out the trail on the other. If you're brave and are willing to do some rock climbing. Oh, and prepared to get a little wet. It's so much fun. A good way to end my vacation.

Just a quick update on my avocado tree. I know, I'm a dork. But, I'm so excited about it.

It's starting to put on leaves! I pinched them off to help the root system. Plus, it forces it to branch out more. I need to plant more to aid in pollination. I need avocados. Yum!

"Early Autumn"

I added a little more to the front entrance this week. I'll wait til it's closer to Halloween to add the more "spooky" decorations. Mostly it's just gonna be tombstones. Ha! I also want to go to a pumpkin patch this year and add some pumpkins to the mix.

I went around the house and gathered all the urns and pots that were unused and put our fake jack-o-lanterns in them. The cords are hiding in the pots. Added some moss to the base to fill the gaps and hide the mechanics. They turned out cute I think.

Using Cottage Magpie's tutorial as a guideline, I made the garland to enhance the Poe theme. I made it quick and it's by no means perfect like hers, but I like it. The tree is still missing something, I just don't know what.

These lit grapevine pumpkins are adorable. Found them at Hobby Lobby for about 18 bucks each.

I haven't done much inside yet. This is pretty much it so far. Our buffet table set for fall using things we already own.

I'm not a fashionista. I rarely think I look good. I don't shop for clothes, and when I do it's a chore. But, I love accessories. Scarves are one of the things I love to wear. Especially during the colder months.

The weather today was wonderful. Cool air, cloudy most of the time. Perfect. A day for a scarf.

"Blackbird"

This weekend I actually was able to do some decorating. Getting ready for Halloween already... it's not even October yet. I'm impatient. Also, I don't have much time anymore, so doing things here and there when I have the time is the only thing I can do.

I am going to keep it simple this year. Clean up is a pain in the butt. Edgar Allen Poe is my theme. And Pottery Barn is my inspiration.

Using a branch that was trimmed from our tree, an old urn, and some rocks from our yard I created the base. Then, I hot-glued moss to all the corners and stuffed it between the rocks. Last, black birds bought from Michaels "randomly" placed.

This is just the start. More to come.

I haven't posted anything about my garden in so long. Mostly because I've not had the time to do anything in there. It looks the same as last year. My tree is much bigger, trims here and there, but everything else... no difference.

However, I did start growing an avocado tree on my window ledge. After a few weeks... it's sprouting. I'm so excited! I love avocados.

The little horse nesting doll I found at a Scandinavian store at Seaport Village looks perfect. I love the little vignette I created by my window. Things are coming together.

Whelp, I'm still laid up in bed with this horrible cold. Three days now... I'm starting to go crazy. I have no energy to do anything around the house and there is only so much browsing the internet and watching movies I can do. Bored! I guess I can read one of the books I've yet to start. Ha!

On to the point of this post. I know there are numerous posts out there about Iris's cottage on "The Holiday" and for good reason, it's ADORABLE. I wasn't really a fan of the movie, but this set alone makes it worth while.

I love the wrought iron bed frame. I've always wanted one. In fact I'm looking to replace my current headboard. Something like this would flow so much better.

This is my favorite part. I would so love to have a little corner library where I could sit and read.

There are so many designers for this movie I'm not sure who actually deigned this particular set, but they did a wonderful job. I wish they had homes like this in Southern Arizona.

"Cowboys and Aliens"

On my last day off I finally went to go see "Cowboys and Aliens." It didn't disappoint. Full of action-y goodness. Plus, Daniel Craig... love him. However, Harrison Ford was actually pretty good too. It's been a long while since he's done anything I've been impressed with. No, I did not enjoy the last Indian Jones movie. It was horrible. Even Cate Blanchett couldn't save it. Anyhoo, back to this. I like it, a perfect feel good summer blockbuster.

Now I know Robert Downey Jr. was originally set to play Jake and dropped out, and I love, love, love Robert, but I think Daniel was a better fit. He's more of a bad ass. It works.

Some time ago, on my way home from somewhere... I can't remember... we stopped at a neighborhood yard sale and I picked up this cute bamboo and cane club chair. The bamboo is faux, but I still love it. It was in excellent shape and only five bucks.

I knew the green fabric had to go and at first thought I would spray paint it primary red. However, after seeing it in the fabric I picked out, I quite like it the natural color.

I love this fabric. I love birds. The color scheme was perfect. Now it just needs a little throw pillow.

Last Wednesday I had a movie date with my Mom and Sis. I had worked eight days straight and needed something fun to do. We went and watched "Fright Night." I love Colin Farrell, he's one of my favorites. And it doesn't hurt that he's so yummy.

Senior Charlie Brewster finally has it all -- he's running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he's so cool he's even dissing his best friend Ed. But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there's something not quite right -- and everyone, including Charlie's mom, doesn't notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he's telling the truth, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself.

I've never seen the original, so I've nothing to compare it to. I liked it. Not great, but it was fun and the acting was good.

I don't think there is anything better than sleeping in on a Saturday or Sunday morning, slowly waking up, and making a pancake brunch. One of my favorite things to eat, I rarely make pancakes for they take so long to prepare. But, every once in awhile... yum!

I've found there is no better recipe than the one on the back of the Bisquick box (plus some vanilla extract). They always come out perfectly... unless I forget about them and color them black. Oops! Still yummy. Plus they're still good cold and plain. Yes, I've eaten pancakes on the go.

Hello Kitty

Remember the kittens we mostly adopted? Well, we actually kept one. Kira. Mama is still around. I don't think she'll ever leave. That's okay. She still is uncomfortable with coming inside. I feel horribly because of the terrible heat, yet she still won't come inside. Kira has adjusted nicely to Max (my dog) and Max to him... although not as well.

It's nice having more animals around the house. Even if he's a troublemaker.

It's been a long while since I posted a recipe. It's been a long while since I've cooked. Seems my life has been limited to work lately. The days I am off I'm too tired to do much.

I love books. There is something so pure about holding one in your hand, turning the pages, and letting your imagination take over. I'm sad to see my favorite bookstore close. Borders. It's the only place in my local mall that I actually look forward to visiting. As you know, I'm not much for shopping for clothes and such. And shopping for books online is nowhere near as interesting.

As well as being fun to read, they are easy to decorate with. I believe they are something every room should incorporate. Yes, every room.

I'm back from my vacation. Tomorrow I go back to work. I don't wanna. Oh well, I must do what needs to be done.

San Diego was wonderful. Warmer than I remember, but still much cooler than here in Arizona. The most wonderful part was the fact that I could be outside for more than a few minutes. I love being outdoors, but in Arizona, during the summer, it's unbearable.

We got to spend Fourth of July on the bay watching fireworks. Other than it being a little chilly and the obnoxious drunks, it was a wonderful 4th.

Yes, I found this in San Diego. I was ecstatic.

I enjoy the bay more than the beach. There are far less people and it's much quieter. I spent half my time just walking around and around.

We were lucky enough to get a garden view which includes a duck pond. Mama had babies. So adorable.

Watched the sunset on Mission Beach.

Belmont Park. Entirely to crowded to be at.

Last. Birch Aquarium. Small. Seahorse exhibit was my favorite part. They are hard to capture on film.

Overlooking La Jolla. My batteries went dead so I didn't get to take pictures of the tide pools. Sad.

So, the cat I've mostly adopted (mostly because my father won't allow her in the house) had kittens. I don't know when. I think it was about a month ago.

Technically they belong to our neighbor, but she doesn't take care of them and flat out said she wants to drop them off somewhere and leave them. I would be heartbroken if that EVER happened.

Nero (mama) moved her babies over to our house, where she knows they will be safe. Now, just need to convince my dad to let us take care of them.

Now that our pool is warm enough to actually get into, I can enjoy being outside again. It's still early in the summer season and although it hasn't been as warm as last year, it's still warm. Hot. Lately things have been stressful, for completely wrong reasons. Up until this point I have loved my job. This last week has been terrible. I feel as if I'm in high school again. Reminders of how catty women can be. So sad.

Anyhoo, back to my point. Oh yes, I remember being a kid and building forts out of whatever we could find around the house. I want to to that now. Escape... just for a little while. Like Alice. A dream. Sheet tents, twinkle lights, popcorn, family, stars.

I started a project a few week ago... maybe it's more like a month. I've been completely busy with work. Anyhoo, after I painted my room I wanted to finish it with some architectural details. The cookie cutter homes that are built in Mesa have as little details as possible. Whatever is easiest... and cheapest to mass produce. Yuck! Boring. So, I went to Home Depot and gathered some supplies for my project. Part 1 is casing around my windows. Part 2 is crown molding. Part 1 is finished... finally.

I still need to do some touch up painting. Even with painter's tape I still managed to get white paint everywhere. I'm a terrible painter, trust me.

It's not perfect. Not even close. But, for my first attempt at something constructional I think I did a pretty good job. I'm satisfied. My windows look more substantial.

My wood blinds were an eyesore. Now, I don't mind them as much. Still not my favorite, but better.

It's that time of year again. Everything is green and blooming. It's wonderful. I haven't had time to do much this year. Working so much.

Planted a potato plant. Only got little bitty potatoes. And the plant died. That's okay, it was a fun experience. Growing something I've never grown before.

My grape vines are magnificent. I'm going to have so many grapes this year. As long as I can keep the birds away.

Our neighbor's cat's claw vine has taken over our yard. It's alright with me. I love how it's growing all around the shed.

The temperatures are hot already. Going outside is almost unbearable. I hate summer.

A couple of weeks ago my mum came home with this adorable mini cake stand and dome. I adore cake stands. I want a collection of them on my kitchen island (when I get one of course). I was instantly in love with this little one. A few days later these mini cupcake candles appeared. They look so delicious. I wish I could make cupcakes that looked this amazing. Oh well.

I mentioned how coral has become the color I'm currently obsessed with. Yellow will always be my favorite, but coral for summer is beautiful. Especially combined with yellow or turquoise.

Our roses finally started blooming. An array of color... white, yellow, red, coral. It's lovely to look out the kitchen window and see.

And it's always wonderful to have fresh flowers next to your bed.

"Pour Some Sugar on Me"

Nothing is more satisfying on a hot summer day than cold ice-cream. I'm a vanilla girl. It's the only flavor you can customize to your liking. Plus it's yummy on it's own.

A long while back I started making chocolate chip cookie ice-cream sandwiches. Simple to make and so enjoyable to eat.

What You'll Need:

Chocolate chip cookie dough - use whatever you like. For a really quick fix I use Pillsbury pre-made dough.
Vanilla ice-cream
Optional: sprinkles (my siblings and I call them a "party" because of all the colors mixed together. It makes me happy.)

How to Make 'Em:

Bake the cookies according to the directions
After the are cool, choose two (the bigger the better)
Add a small scoop of ice-cream to the back of one.
Sandwich them together.
Add the sprinkles to the exposed ice-cream layer.

I'm not really a cacti person. You would think growing up in the desert I would be, but no... never have been. I wish we had the wonderful gardens of Europe. Bright colors, lush landscapes.

However, every year I look forward to our prickly pear blooms. Once you get past the harsh thorns they are actually quite beautiful.

The bright coral color is a nice contrast against the abundance of beige. And lately, coral is a color I'm obsessed with.

If you look closely, you can see they would actually make a fantastic floral... if you could somehow collect them. Oh well.

"Sucker Punch"

So, last weekend I went to watch Sucker Punch. It wasn't a movie I was particularly interested in seeing. But, I like Zack Snyder as a director and fell in love with Emily Browning in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Also, I love stupid shoot 'em up action movies that have no plot or purpose. That's what summer is about. Nothing serious.

I know the reviews for the film lean towards horrid, but I didn't mind it. However, the thing that stood out the most was the soundtrack. It is amazing. I never buy soundtracks... I bought this one.

A young girl (Baby Doll) is locked away in a mental asylum by her abusive stepfather where she will undergo a lobotomy in five days time. Faced with unimaginable odds, she retreats to a fantastical world in her imagination where she and four other female inmates at the asylum, plot to escape the facility. The lines between reality and fantasy blur as Baby Doll and her four companions, as well as a mysterious guide, fight to retrieve the five items they need that will allow them to break free from their captors before it's too late...

Spring is coming. Blooms and growth are abundant. It's been awhile since I've had anything interesting happen in my garden. Everything has been hibernating. Quiet. Sleep.

Now one of my favorite things has begun. The orange tree has put on numerous blossoms. Sweet fragrance fills the air. Perfection.

Warm enough to start working on this pasty skin. Read books. Listen to music. With these beauties it won't be hard.

Added bonus... we'll have yummy oranges in a few months.

Super Moon?

So this supposed super moon occurred on the nineteenth. I didn't get to catch the moon rise. Cloud cover and... well... I forgot. And I was looking so for. On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super "perigee moon"--the biggest in almost 20 years.

"The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993," says Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC. "I'd say it's worth a look."

Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit."The full Moon of March 19th occurs less than one hour away from perigee--a near-perfect coincidence that happens only 18 years or so," adds Chester.

A perigee full Moon brings with it extra-high "perigean tides," but this is nothing to worry about, according to NOAA. In most places, lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide waters only a few centimeters (an inch or so) higher than usual. Local geography can amplify the effect to about 15 centimeters (six inches)--not exactly a great flood.

The best time to look is when the Moon is near the horizon. That is when illusion mixes with reality to produce a truly stunning view. For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging Moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects. On March 19th, why not let the "Moon illusion" amplify a full Moon that's extra-big to begin with? The swollen orb rising in the east at sunset may seem so nearby, you can almost reach out and touch it.

Although I didn't get to capture this amazing sight, it's still fun to look through what other's have.

Months and months back I made a trip down to Goodwill with my mother. She was looking for a buffet to re-purpose for our back porch. While we didn't find anything that particular day, I did manage to find something for myself.

A collection of books. Fairy Tales, Wuthering Heights, Mark Twain, Fables. I believe this version is from the fifties, so not antique, but still quite an interesting find. The fables and fairy tales will be wonderful to read to my children... when I have them.

"Falling Slowly"

Sunday morning. Woke before dawn and went to work. Headed home at noon. Glorious sight. The Superstition Mountains blanketed in snow.

We had a freeze warning the night before and snow was expected. I wish I was able to capture the exact moment. The way the bright white clouds billowed over the mountain top. Covered in white snow, the contrast of the dark rock peeking through. Blue sky. It was magical.

Alas, by the time I got home, food in my belly, and headed for the mountains most of the snow had melted. Still, I managed to get some amazing shots. Yes I know it's just snow, but I'm from the Southwest... I don't see it often.

"Innocent"

Yesterday I found out some saddening news. My friend Kelli found out on February 16 that her son has AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). He is only two years old and already has begun chemo.

"When it Rains"

I am utterly content today. My week has been occupied with displeasing occurrences.

To begin, my power adapter for my laptop decides to finally die. It's been a long time coming, it's wires exposed and frayed. Trying to save money I foolishly purchased a less expensive off brand adapter. Ha! It lasted thirty minutes before, we presume, overheated and died as well. Nevertheless, I ended up spending the sixty-five dollars for the DELL power adapter. Two weeks and eighty bucks later, I've finally got my computer back.

After this ordeal, I catch a cold that causes me to run a one hundred plus fever for days. How dull life is laying in bed with nothing to do because your computer is on the fritz. Luckily, Netflix got me through those days.

Now, after a long week at work it is my day off. The weather could not be more perfect. I lazily spent the day in my room, by my lonesome (minus the time it took to run into the freezing, pins and needles rain to collect the recyclable materials that were scattered on the street. Garbage days and gusts of wind do not cooperate with one another.)

And now... calm.

Going Blonde

Three of my four days are gone. Flew by. Busy with this paint job. Much more money and time than I thought.

I must begin by explaining. I thought this would be a two day project and cost me maybe fifty bucks. I was completely wrong. I found that hue I was searching for. Custard, by Martha Stewart. When I was picking samples another customer had stated how wonderful this brand was. The best she had ever used. I usually use Behr and have never had problems with it. I just happened to find my color in Martha Stewart. I remembered this comment and had no reservations.

And so begins my problems. I don't know about others but for me this was the absolute worse paint I've ever used (and I've used Walmart, K-mart, Lowes, and Home Depot brands). And to top it off, it's more expensive... Ugh! Three coats! I've never had to have three coats! Never again.

So, one hundred dollars, three coats, and three days later... my painting project is complete. The color reflects the light rather than absorbs it, so it's so much brighter in here. Even with no lights on. Much better. I just wish it wasn't such a pain in my ass. No regrets, for I've learned to stick with Behr.

"One Rainy Day"

Day off of work. Much needed. I'm sure I'll return to a crazy mess. Sigh.

However, today is my day. I've been lazy. The day called for it. Beautiful, cloudy, rainy. Window open letting the crisp cold breeze in. I am planning. Now that I've more money in my pocket, it's time to finally paint. I have a four day weekend. (I have to put it out of my mind what four days away from work will do. Don't think about it.) Perfect opportunity to paint.

I currently have a taupe color. From a previous direction I took. I love it. It's just too dreary in my room, which gets almost no natural sunlight. I'm going back to yellow. My favorite color. The problem is finding the perfect hue.

I was hoping to be in my own place by now, but life hasn't allowed that to happen. So I'll make the most of this place while I'm here. Right?

"Buried"

Last night I had a movie date with Mom. Popcorn and gummy bears. Snuggled in my blanket. Perfection.

We watched Buried.

Paul is a U.S. contractor working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.

One of the best films I have ever seen. It reminds me of a classic Alfred Hitchcock. Vertigo. Rear Window. Dial M for Murder. That intense fear and realism. Not many directors can capture that as well as Hitchcock, however Rodrigo Cortes did an amazing job.

Even the promotional art work is reminiscent of Hitchcock. See it.

Happy Birthday to Me?

Another year. Wow. Tempus fugit.

My insecurities haven't changed. I still dreaded this day. Another year older, yet still my goals seem years from being complete. I don't know how this coming year will treat me. I hope it's kind. Last year had it's ups and downs.

I lost two important people in my life. My dear friend Ryan and my Grandfather. Oh, how they are missed. Yet, I must acknowledge all the people I met this year that have become so important to me, and the old friends that continue to be.

I'm still single. Although I never thought I would marry before I was thirty, I feel odd watching my friends and family members get engaged, married, and begin families of their own. I'm conflicted.

I got my promotion. My bills are lessening and there is more money in my pocket. I've forgotten what it was like not living paycheck to paycheck. Maybe this year will be the year I'll finally get to move into my own place. That would be absolutely wonderful. With the economy still not in the right direction my dream of opening my store is on hold. Someday. Sooner rather than later I hope.

I'm becoming more confident in my skin. I'm still losing weight. Twenty-eight pounds. Maybe this year will be the year I'll see what everyone else sees. No longer put myself down. Think I'm pretty. We shall see.

Yes, perhaps this year will be better.

"It's Been Awhile"

Finally, after months upon months I finally finished reading Brief Interviews With Hideous Men. Not that it was a hard read (I enjoyed it very much), I just never found the time. Holidays and all.

Now that I completed it, I've moved on. I acquired a Boarder's gift card for Christmas and recently made a new purchase. Some of the books that were higher on my list to read were not available, and no, I didn't want to purchase online. So, down the list I went.

Youth in Revolt. I fancy the movie. My thought process is, "if I like the movie, the book will probably be better". We shall see. I just started it today, and am only a few pages in, so no conclusions yet.

It's nice to be reading again. Nice to have time to read again. Something to enjoy while I fret over my nearing birthday. Ugh...

Growing up in the desert, I never really experienced everything nature has to offer. There is only so much cacti and other desert botanicals provide. Don't get me wrong, there are beautiful times (Spring, when the wildflowers bloom... incredible), but more often than not, it's dry and dull.

Our oak tree gives us a tiny glimpse of something different. I love going outside and collecting all the acorns that have tumbled through the branches and landed on the grass.

I find them adorable. Don't ask me why, I just do. Something beautiful that nature supplies.

Besides, next Autumn/Winter I'll have these little guys to decorate with. I'm hoping for enough to fill a vase or canister. Right now they've found a home in my Grandmother's crystal candy dishes.

The other day my sister introduced me to Esao Andrews. It was a quick introduction and now I'm quite intrigued.

His style reminds me a lot of Salvador Dali (coloring and Gothic nature), yet unique and completely different. Understand? Probably not.

It's so fantastic, full of fantasy. Real yet unreal.

Love, love, love this one.

He grew up in Mesa, Arizona and went to my high school. I'm full of pride. Anytime I hear of anyone from Arizona that's made a name for themselves, but especially the talented ones. He has so many others, these were just a few that caught my attention.

Snow in Mesa, Arizona? No. Yes!

Can you imagine? It doesn't happen very often. Last time I can recall was in 1997 or so... not quite sure. And no, it's not blanket the desert in white. Nor cold enough for it to stick for more than a few seconds. However, it is enough to say that, yes indeed, it did happen. Not so much in my area, but others.

For the majority of the time this brilliant event was occurring I was at work (not one of my best days either -see previous post). When I got home the storm was still overhead.

Dark grey clouds, chilly winter air. Remarkably delightful. I loved how the dark grey contrasted against the light bark branches of our dormant trees.

All the proof I can provide. A tiny bit of snow before it melted away.

Another year. To ponder and worry.

But first. I hope everyone's New Year's celebrations were fantastic. Safe, of course.

Now that fireworks are legal in my neck of the woods the whole neighborhood (including myself) had tremendous fun lighting them off. Low key as always. Half the night spent at a friend's house and the rest with my family. No big parties to go to.

On to other matters. This year didn't end well. The last two days at work were emotionally exhausting. And the last few weeks left me questioning myself. So, instead of dragging out my resolutions (like last year), I will be to the point. Blunt.

Be a better me. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally.

It's as simple as that.

Now, as far as last year's resolutions go...

I learned new things. Not a lot, but some. I laughed. Thanks to some new friends who, no matter what, can make my day better. I broke free of my insecurities and accomplished something I thought I could never do. I lost some weight. Not a lot, but enough to begin to see myself better. Love myself a little more. Feel like maybe I'm worth the trouble.

So here's to the new year. Bonne Année!

Less than a week away... I'm not ready. These last few days will be a panic. Working long hours, making cookies, last minute gifts to put together. Didn't have money to spend this year, so cookies and truffles are my gifts. That's good right? Made with love.

The decorating has been done for awhile. That's the only thing that feels "ready".

Since I still live at home and the rest of the house is a different decor than mine, there is a different theme. Rustic red, pine green, and snowy white. I can't remember where we found these wire urns, but I love them. Filled with red ornaments they make a simple table-scape. I believe the copper reindeer are from Target... years ago.

Past Christmas cards are displayed on the hard surfaces around the house.

Kept the tree simple this year. Too busy. Didn't want to clean up the mess when the big day is over. I loved how it turned out though.

Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice

Apple pie. An American classic. Takes forever to make, from scratch anyway. I found an easy solution. Baked apples.

They are super easy to make and super yummy to eat. Thanks to Paula Deen and The Food Network for the recipe. I wish I had an apple corer. They would have looked prettier. I may have to invest in one.... hum...

It did taste just like apple pie, minus the crust. I added more cinnamon than it called for. Did I mention my love of cinnamon? Ummm cinnamon...

I used a melon baller to scoop out some vanilla ice-cream. The warm apple melted the ice-cream creating a cinnamon sugar vanilla goodness. Yum-yum!

"These Are a Few of My Favorite Things"

Ah, Southern Arizona... the only quality that changes from season to season is the temperature. Most trees don't lose their leaves or changes colors. It's boring and bland. Up North it's different. Beautiful. But, not here.

I love the trees in our back yard. The leaves actually change color and tumble to the Earth.

They don't have the grandeur of a Maple or Oak leaf, but the little yellow leaves that blanket the now dying grass, is enough for me.

By the way, I love this tree. Underneath her branches is my absolutely favorite spot in my yard.

Holiday Traditions

As I've mentioned before, cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning are our tradition. This year, since I've become quite the cook and baker (a little sell promoting never hurt anyone), I wanted to make some from scratch. Yesterday I did a "practice run" so that, come Christmas morning, it's not a terrible mess that no one wants to taste.

I wasn't sure which recipe to use, there are so many out there. Alton Brown's is the one I eventually went with. Even if it looked the most complicated. His sugar cookie recipe is the best I've tasted, so I trusted this wouldn't disappoint, if I didn't mess it up that is.

It was a long process, but it wasn't difficult to follow.

I'm not very good at using yeast. I've only used it a couple of times. Each time it ended in disaster. It never rose, it didn't mix well, everything separated. I was extremely nervous about using it. Even with this, I don't think it rose as much as it should have (double in size).

I made my little brother take the first bite. Worrying they didn't tun out. He nodded his head with approval.

I've never had buttermilk before, and the smell was horrid, but you couldn't really taste it. The yeast on the other hand. Maybe it's just me, but it tasted a little yeasty. The icing wasn't very good so I added some vanilla and a little more powdered sugar. Overall, it was worth it and in a couple of weeks I probably make them again. That is... if I don't work Christmas Eve.

Kings & Queens: PT II

I was browsing through the "Watch Instantly" section on Netflix the other day. I was in the mood for a period piece. The Duchess came up. I've seen it once before and in enjoyed it, though it was not one of my favorites. I ended up watching it again. Still, my craving for a delicious period film was not satisfied. The Young Victoria was also one that came up. I was hesitant to watch it, why I'm not sure...

It was absolutely magical. Emily Blunt was amazing. I loved, loved, loved this film. The love between Victoria and Albert is enviable. I would watch this many more times and recommended it to everyone.

Plot: A dramatization of the turbulent first years of Queen Victoria's rule, and her enduring romance with Prince Albert.

I do need to ask, any others I should view? Still want to watch more.

"Baby, It's Cold Outside"

Hope everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving. Full of delicious food and warm company. I know mine was just... okay. Don't ask.

And Black Friday, oh, Black Friday. At work at two-thirty in the morning. Walk up to a long line winding around the building. People standing in the cold for a few bucks off their purchases this holiday season. Still boggles my mind. How many more weeks 'til Christmas? Work is crazy. Although it keeps me busy, I'm ready to be more relaxed at work.

On to other matters. The last couple of days have brought freezing temperatures at night (or around the freezing point). I love the cold, I do, but even for me it's quite chilly. Waking with my covers up to my neck. Sleeping soundly through the night. Comfy pajamas. Oh, how I love this season. Now, if I could only get more than a day a week off work I could actually enjoy it.

"It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas"

I couldn't resist. I must confess, I started decorating for Christmas. We had our first winter storm yesterday. Clouds, rain, and cold. *giggles with glee* Perfect for getting into the spirit of things. Now, most of my day was spent cleaning and what not. I have very little time these days (Black Friday is approaching) so what time I do have is for the "necessities." But, I did sneak in a bit of time adding a few Holiday touches, as I was vacuuming and dusting, of course.

I've decided to go with an Earthy feel this year. Colors found in nature this wonderful time of year. Pine greens, woodsy browns, snowy whites. Cinnamon pine cones found at Michael's are a must. Remember it's my favorite smell? A can of fake snow on just a few of them add a different texture to the mix.

My Apothecary Jars filled with the pine cones and green ornaments. A small box I acquired last Christmas filled with a beaded necklace.

More pine cones and ornaments. I love jingle bells! Cute and rustic. Full of charm, no?

Is it...

to early to be thinking about Christmas decorating? I can't help it... I love it! I've not decided what "theme" I want this year (I guess I should hurry, Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away). There are just too many options to choose from.

I love the simplicity of black, white, and green. It would fit in perfectly with my mainly white and black room. Hum... perhaps.

Or rustic white with a touch of green.

But... beige, white, red, and green is so traditional and warm.

Cream, white, silver, green? Very elegant.

I'm sure something will jump out at me and scream "I adore this!" Until then, I'm having fun browsing ideas.

As Seen On: Sherlock Holmes

I have to say, I loved everything about Sherlock Holmes. But, what stood out the most (besides the incredible Robert) was the set design.

If I could pack by belongings and settle into Katie Spencer's 221B Baker Street, I would be in heaven.

The eclectic mix of styles, colors, fabrics is elegant yet whimsical. I love every single piece in Holmes' Quarters.

Guy Ritchie's Take on 221B Baker Street:

The iconic set for the film was one of the most famous addresses in the world: 221B Baker Street, the flat Sherlock Holmes shares with his close friend Dr. John Watson. In its clutter and chaos, the apartment reveals both Holmes's disorganized personal habits and the detective's brilliant, complex mind.

Layered detailing is essential to the set. Ritchie notes, "Everything is supposed to represent his journeys, his travels, his inquisitive nature into the human condition and the human anatomy, chemistry, photography...frankly, anything that's worthy of Holmes's interest."

Dog-eared books, newspapers, paintings from the Near East, unpaid bills, maps of Britain, anatomical drawings, Oriental carpets, a tiger-skin rug, half-eaten food from forgotten meals, not to mention Watson's exceedingly tolerant dog, Gladstone, can all be found in Holmes's Rooms. In keeping with his profession, there are wigs, mustaches and false noses for disguises, and a padded post for Holmes's martial arts practice.

“There were also many references to previous cases,” Spencer indicates, “Including lemon juice that Holmes uses for secret writing, a glass-covered diorama of bee hives, and a corner for Holmes's phrenology studies, another popular area of interest among the educated classes during this period.”

“We were very lucky that we had Robert Downey Jr’s attention and opinion. His help here was invaluable. It was great fun to go deeper and deeper into the madness of Robert’s interpretation of Holmes’s mind.”

"It's just minutiae, but to him it's really engaging," Downey explains. "It's those touches that really help you feel comfortable on this set. The reality of his job is that it entails long amounts of time spent in isolation, but when he's not stimulated, it's a fate worse than death. So, hopefully Baker Street embodies everything it takes for him not to be bored to death."

"It was fantastic to have an actor who cares about his environment, who will use the props in a way we didn't imagine," says Spencer. “Robert was incredibly informed and organic. He would inhabit the set—he loved small details and would find a way to use them within the scene. A mahogany walnut-cracker, for example, was placed as backstory—Holmes has been locked away in his room for 2+ weeks, but he has to survive on something, so we gave him a mania for nuts, which seemed to suit. Robert used it. Then Rachel McAdams, as Holmes's great love and Achilles' heel Irene Adler, used it. The nutcracker became a sort of metaphor…"

I consider myself a very eclectic person. The world's different cultures, design styles, and architectures fascinate me. Incorporating different themes into my design is, for me, necessary. I love to many things to exclude them from my life.

At work we have a collection from Elle Decor. My coworkers don't appreciate it as much as I do. Part of the collection are these amazing Buddhist hands. I adore them. However, they were thirty dollars apiece and way out of my budget. Last week, they went on clearance. $ 5.99 each. Much better.

I'm not crazy about the bright gold color, but that's nothing a little paint and elbow grease can't fix.

All Hallow's Eve

I have simple plans for this Halloween. I have to get up early for work tomorrow morning, so I'm afraid there will be no partying for me. Instead I'll be lounging around in my pajamas handing out candy and watching some of my favorite scary horror movies.

The end of the week brought a storm that decreased temperatures and trickled rain. Needless to say, it made me quite happy. We don't see rainbows often. So, yes, I get excited when one is stretched across the sky.
